Types of therapy we offer

There are many ways to do therapy. Each one suits different needs, and many therapists mix them. Here is what we offer, and who offers it.

Couples therapy

For partners who feel stuck, distant, or keep having the same fight. Our couples work includes the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Read more about couples therapy in Dubai.

Family therapy

The family meets with a therapist to talk about what feels hard at home. See family therapy in Dubai.

CBT and DBT skills

CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) works on the links between what you think, feel and do. You learn practical skills to use between sessions. All five of our psychologists offer it. DBT (dialectical behaviour therapy) skills help you cope when feelings run very high. Four of our psychologists teach them. Find out more about CBT and DBT.

EMDR

EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) helps with upsetting memories after a trauma. You hold a memory in mind while you move your eyes from side to side, guided by your therapist. Two of our psychologists offer it, one of them an EMDRIA Certified Therapist. Learn about EMDR and trauma therapy.

Other approaches

We also offer ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy). It helps you make room for hard feelings and act on what matters to you. Mindfulness helps you notice the present moment. Looking for a certain approach? Just ask us.

Therapy, counselling or psychotherapy: what's the difference?

People use these three words in different ways, and they overlap a lot.

Therapy

"Therapy" is the everyday word for talking with a trained professional about what's troubling you. Counselling and psychotherapy are both kinds of talking therapy.

Counselling

A counsellor listens without judging. They help you look at your thoughts and feelings, and find your own answers. Counsellors don't usually give advice or tell you what to do.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy means talking with a trained practitioner about what has happened to you, and how it affects you now. Psychotherapists have extra training in a certain way of working.

So which do you need? You don't have to pick the right word. Just tell us what's happening, and we'll match you with someone. At British Premier, our psychologists give therapy and counselling. To see how psychologists and psychiatrists differ, read about our psychologists in Dubai.

What are the signs you might need therapy?

There's no test to pass first. You don't need a diagnosis, and things don't have to feel "bad enough". These are some common reasons people start:

  • You've felt worried, low or flat for a few weeks.
  • Stress is affecting your sleep, your work or the people close to you.
  • You're going through a big change, a loss or a breakup.
  • The same arguments keep happening at home.
  • Something from the past still upsets you.
  • Unwanted thoughts or habits take up a lot of your time.
  • You'd like to understand yourself better.

What happens in your first therapy or counselling session?

  • Beforebook the free call. Tell us if it's for you, a couple or a family, and which language you'd like. We'll suggest a therapist and find a time.
  • In the sessionyou talk about what's brought you, and what you'd like to be different. Your therapist asks some questions. Then they explain what they could offer. You decide how much to share.
  • Afteryou agree a plan together, including how often to meet.
  • Privacyyour sessions are confidential.

What is therapy really like? Three myths

"Therapy is only for serious problems."

Anyone can come. Many people come for stress, a big life change or a relationship.

"The therapist will tell me what to do."

Therapy is teamwork. Your therapist helps you find your own answers, then works through them with you.

"I'll have to talk about my childhood, and everything else, straight away."

You decide what to talk about, and when. The past can come up if it helps. But a lot of therapy is about now.

Common questions

How much does a therapist cost in Dubai?

Ask us about fees on WhatsApp. We don't bill insurers directly. You pay at the clinic, and we give you an invoice and the forms to claim from your insurer. For therapy, insurers usually ask for a psychiatrist's referral letter. Our psychiatrists work in the same clinic, so we can arrange it. There's more on fees and insurance.

What are the signs I need therapy?

If worry, low mood, stress or relationship problems last for weeks, or get in the way of daily life, it may help to talk to a therapist. You don't need a diagnosis to start.

What's the difference between a therapist and a counsellor?

Not much, in everyday use. "Therapist" is the wider word. A counsellor is one kind of therapist, who listens and helps you find your own answers.

Which kind of therapy is right for me?

You don't need to choose a method first. On the free call, describe things in your own words. We'll suggest the kind of therapy, and the therapist, that fit.

How many therapy sessions will I need?

There's no set number. It depends on you, and on what you'd like to change. You and your therapist look at this together as you go.

Is it "counsellor" or "counselor"?

Both are right. "Counsellor" is the British spelling, and "counselor" is the American one. It's the same job.

Where does therapy take place?

We see everyone in person at our clinic on Sheikh Zayed Road. Ask us on WhatsApp about flexible appointment arrangements.
