What is OCD, and what are the signs?
OCD stands for obsessive-compulsive disorder. It has two parts.
- Obsessions are unwanted thoughts, images or urges. They keep coming back, even when you try to push them away.
- Compulsions are things you feel you must do, or think, to ease the worry.
The relief from a compulsion doesn't last. So the worry comes back, and the cycle starts again.
Common examples include:
- Worrying about germs, and washing your hands a lot
- Checking doors, locks or switches again and again
- Needing things in a set order, or exactly even
- Counting, or repeating words in your head
- Asking other people for reassurance, over and over
Everyone double-checks things now and then. With OCD, it takes up a lot of time. It also gets in the way of work, school or home life.
OCD isn't the same as general worry. If your worries don't follow this pattern, our page on anxiety treatment may fit better.

OCD in children and teenagers
OCD can start in childhood. A child might wash a lot, need things to feel "just right", or ask the same question again and again.
UK guidance from NICE says children should have CBT that fits their age. It also says the family should be involved. So as a parent, you are part of the plan.
For psychiatry, two of our psychiatrists are consultant child and adolescent psychiatrists. They see children and teenagers from 5 to 18.
For therapy, our psychologists see children too.

How is OCD treated?
In the UK, NICE and the NHS name one main talking therapy for OCD. It is CBT that includes exposure and response prevention, or ERP.
UK guidance (NICE) describes ERP like this:
- You and your therapist note down what triggers the obsessions, from the mildest to the hardest.
- Bit by bit, you come into contact with each trigger, beginning with the mildest.
- Each time, you resist the urge to carry out the compulsion.
- You keep working on this between sessions.
The idea is to learn that the worry can pass on its own, without the compulsion.
Four of our psychologists offer CBT, and one holds a CBT diploma in OCD. Read more about CBT therapy in Dubai.
You and your therapist agree how often to meet.
For more severe OCD, or when therapy alone isn't enough, a psychiatrist may suggest medicine as well. See how our psychiatrists work.
What happens at the first appointment for OCD?
Your clinician asks what the thoughts and habits are. They ask how much time they take, and what they stop you doing.
Many people with OCD feel embarrassed to talk about it. That's very common. You can share at your own pace, and you don't have to say everything at once.
At the end, you talk about next steps together.
Not sure whether to start with a psychologist or a psychiatrist?

OCD help for adults
You can book for yourself directly. You don't need a diagnosis first, or a referral.
For most adults, therapy comes first, as UK guidance advises.
If medicine might help, our psychiatrist for adults works in the same clinic. So therapy and medical care can be part of one plan.
Common questions
What are the common signs of OCD?
Unwanted thoughts, images or urges that keep coming back. And things a person feels they must do, or think, to ease the worry, like checking, washing or counting.
What is the main treatment for OCD?
The main talking therapy is CBT with exposure and response prevention (ERP). If OCD is more severe, a psychiatrist may also suggest medicine.
How do you stop OCD compulsions?
With ERP, you and your therapist plan small steps to face a worry without doing the compulsion. You practise between sessions. The aim is to let the worry pass without "putting it right".
Can I deal with OCD thoughts on my own?
For milder OCD, UK guidance lists self-help based on CBT, ideally with a therapist's support. If OCD takes up a lot of your day, it's worth talking to us.
Why does OCD feel so hard to live with?
The thoughts bring worry or unease, and compulsions only ease it for a short time. So the cycle keeps going. Many people also feel embarrassed to talk about it.
