Couples therapy, marriage counselling or relationship counselling: what's the difference?

These are different names for much the same help. Many therapists call it couples therapy. Many married couples call it marriage counselling. Relationship counselling can also mean one person talking about a relationship.

In each case, you talk with a trained therapist about the problems in your relationship. At British Premier, the same psychologists offer all three.

If your children are part of the worries, family therapy brings the whole family together.

How does couples therapy work at British Premier?

  1. Book a free call. It's a short call with one of our specialists to understand what you need. No obligation.
  2. We match you with a psychologist. Tell us if you'd like sessions in Arabic, French, Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi.
  3. Your psychologist listens to what each of you hopes for. Then you agree together what to work on.

You don't need a referral to book.

Which approaches do our couples therapists use?

Ms Priyanka Bhatia Mahendru uses two approaches for couples.

  • The Gottman Method. It was developed by Drs John and Julie Gottman. It looks at your friendship, how you handle conflict, and the hopes you share.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). It looks at the feelings under your arguments. It aims to help partners feel close and safe with each other.

Our other couples psychologists also work with families, including parents who want to work together on parenting.

Can I come to relationship counselling on my own?

Yes. Our couples psychologists also see adults on their own, so you can talk about your relationship one to one.

In your sessions, you can look at your relationship, the patterns you keep falling into, and what you want.

You may want support for other worries too. Our psychologists in Dubai also offer therapy and counselling for adults.

Common questions

How much does couples therapy cost in Dubai?

Ask us about fees on WhatsApp. Your first short call with one of our specialists is free.

We don't bill insurers directly. You pay at the clinic, and we give you an invoice and the forms to claim from your insurer.

What does a marriage or relationship counsellor do?

They help you both talk, listen and understand the patterns between you. They don't take sides. They help you agree on changes you'd like to try.

What happens in the first couples session?

Your psychologist asks what has been happening and what each of you hopes for. Then you agree what to work on.

How many sessions will we need?

It depends on you both and on what you want to work on. You can talk with your psychologist about how it's going at any time.

Is couples counselling private?

Yes. What you tell us stays confidential within your care team. Your therapist explains how they handle couples sessions at the start.

Can we have sessions in Arabic or another language?

Yes. Ghania offers sessions in English, French or Arabic. Priyanka offers English, Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi.

How do we choose a couples therapist?

Look for a licensed professional with training in couples work. Check the approach they use and the languages they offer. Most of all, you should both feel heard. A short call can help you decide.
