What does a psychologist do?

A psychologist is trained in how people think, feel and act. They help you understand what is going on. They also look at what keeps a problem going. Then they work with you on what you'd like to change.

Most of the work is talking. A psychologist may:

  • Listen to what has been happening, and ask questions
  • Use questionnaires or standard tests to understand you better
  • Offer talking therapy for one person, a couple or a whole family
  • With your consent, work with your family or your child's school

Psychologists aren't medical doctors, and they don't prescribe medicine. If medicine might help, a psychiatrist can see you in the same clinic.

Psychologist or psychiatrist: which do you need?

Both help with mental health. They train in different ways, and they help in different ways. Many people see both. The two teams work side by side in one clinic, so you can see both at British Premier.

Psychologist

  • Studied psychology, the science of how people think, feel and act.
  • Helps through assessments and talking therapy.
  • Doesn't prescribe medicine.
  • Our psychologists are therapists too. See our therapy and counselling sessions.

See a psychologist first if you'd like to talk it over, learn new ways to cope, or have an assessment.

Psychiatrist

  • A medical doctor who then trained in mental health.
  • Can make a diagnosis, and can prescribe medicine as part of a plan.
  • Often works closely with psychologists.

See a psychiatrist first if you'd like a medical view, or you wonder if medicine could help. Meet our psychiatry team.

Not sure which to choose?

You don't have to. Tell us what's going on, and we'll suggest who to see first.

Psychologist or clinical psychologist: what's the difference?

"Psychologist" is the broad word for someone trained in psychology. In health care, psychologists then choose a special area. Clinical, counselling and health psychology are three of them.

A clinical psychologist has extra training to assess and treat mental health problems. They work with people of all ages, and often with families too.

Each of our psychologists holds a Dubai licence, from either the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) or the Community Development Authority (CDA). Each profile lists that person's training, and our licences and registrations are all in one place.

Whichever title you see, each of them offers talking therapy.

What is a psychological assessment?

An assessment helps us understand how a person thinks, learns, feels and behaves. That way, the help can fit the person.

It usually means talking with you, filling in questionnaires, and doing some standard tests. For a child, we may also ask about home and school, with your consent.

Our psychologists do learning assessments (sometimes called psychoeducational assessments), ADHD and autism assessments, and the ADOS-2 observation for autism.

Dr Graham and our psychiatrists can confirm an ADHD diagnosis. Our psychiatrists confirm an autism diagnosis.

For the steps, the ages and the options for adults, see ADHD assessment in Dubai and autism assessments.

Worried about seeing a psychologist?

Lots of people feel nervous before a first appointment. Here are three common worries, and how we work.

"Can I be helped?"

Many people ask this. You don't need the right words, or a neat story. The first step is simply to talk. Your psychologist listens first. Then they explain how they could help.

"Will they judge me?"

Psychologists are trained to listen without judging. You choose what to share, and when. You can go at your own pace.

"Will what I say stay private?"

Yes. All consultations are confidential.

Common questions

How much does it cost to see a psychologist in Dubai?

Ask us about fees on WhatsApp, and we'll share them before you book anything. Your first short call with one of our specialists is free. If you plan to claim from insurance, see how paying and claiming works.

Is it better to see a psychiatrist or a psychologist?

Neither is better. It depends on what you need. Psychologists help by talking with you, and by doing assessments. Psychiatrists are medical doctors, which means they can also prescribe medicine. Both work in our clinic, so you can start with either.

What does a clinical psychologist do?

A clinical psychologist assesses and treats mental health problems. They use talking, questionnaires and tests. Our clinical psychologists are Dr Graham Williams and Ms Ghania Kabbara.

How do I find the right psychologist in Dubai?

Look for a licensed psychologist whose experience fits your worry, your age group and your language. Each of our psychologists holds a DHA or CDA licence. Or tell us what you need, and we'll suggest someone from our team.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

No. You can book directly. For therapy, insurers usually ask for a psychiatrist's referral letter. Our psychiatrists work in the same clinic, so we can arrange it.

Can I choose a male or female psychologist?

Yes. We have both male and female specialists. Just tell us your preference when you message. You can also ask for someone who speaks Arabic, French, Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi.

Do your psychologists see adults?

Yes. Adults can see both our psychologists and our psychiatrists, and so can children and teenagers. This includes ADHD and autism assessments for adults. Children can see a psychologist at British Premier from age 5, depending on who they see.
