What are the signs of ADHD?

ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It affects how a person pays attention, how still they can sit, and how well they can stop and think.

The main signs are:

  • Trouble paying attentionLosing focus, forgetting things, losing things, or not finishing tasks.
  • Being very activeFidgeting, finding it hard to sit still, or talking a lot.
  • Acting without thinkingInterrupting, finding it hard to wait, or not seeing danger.

Every child is restless or forgetful at times. With ADHD, the signs are there most days. They start in childhood. They show up in more than one place, such as at home and at school. And they make daily life harder.

Other things can look like ADHD. Autism, anxiety, low mood and learning difficulties can all affect focus. That's one reason a full assessment matters. Our team also carries out autism assessments for children and adults.

How does an ADHD assessment work at British Premier?

People often call it ADHD testing. But there is no single test for ADHD. Instead, a specialist builds a full picture of daily life.

An ADHD assessment usually includes:

  • ListeningWe talk with you, and with your child, about what you have noticed.
  • Your child's storyWe ask about early years, health, family life and school.
  • QuestionnairesYou may be asked to fill in forms about everyday life.
  • What we foundYour specialist explains the results in plain words.
  • A written planYou agree the next steps together.

UK guidance from NICE says a diagnosis should never rest on questionnaires alone. So your specialist looks at the whole picture, not at one form.

Who does ADHD assessments at British Premier: a psychiatrist or a psychologist?

Both. Our psychiatrists and psychologists work in the same clinic, and both assess ADHD.

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor and can prescribe medicine.

Psychologist

A psychologist helps through talking and practical strategies.

Read more about the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist.

Our psychiatrists and Dr Graham Williams can confirm an ADHD diagnosis. Ms Anvita Kamath assesses children and teenagers too. A psychiatrist or Dr Graham then confirms the diagnosis.

For other worries about your child, see child and adolescent psychiatry in Dubai or our psychologists for children and teenagers.

How is ADHD treated after the assessment?

ADHD treatment starts with a plan made for your child, or for you. You agree it with your specialist. It looks at home, school or work, sleep and wellbeing.

A plan can include:

  • Support from a psychologistPractical strategies, help with feelings and confidence, and help to understand what a diagnosis means.
  • Ideas for parentsWays to help at home, and ways to talk with your child about ADHD.
  • Help at schoolIf it would help, your specialist talks with you about how to support your child at school.
  • Medical care from a psychiatristA plan may include medicine, with regular reviews. See how our psychiatrists approach treatment.

After a diagnosis, our psychologists give support, for children, teenagers and adults.

Our psychologists use approaches such as CBT. CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) looks at how thoughts, feelings and actions link together.

A plan isn't fixed. You can talk about changing it at any time.

ADHD assessment for adults

ADHD starts in childhood. But some people only find out as adults. At work and at home, it can show up as trouble with focus, time, planning or restlessness.

Our psychiatrists and psychologists don't only see children and teenagers. They see adults too, and they assess adults for ADHD and autism.

An adult assessment asks about your life now and your childhood. Your specialist may ask to speak with someone who knows you well, or knew you as a child. Old school reports can help too.

Adults are assessed by Dr Imran, Dr Saima or Dr Graham. All three can confirm an ADHD diagnosis, and all three see adults for follow-up.
